Want to know a little bit about me…
I’ve always loved wood.
For me, woodturning isn’t just a craft — it’s curiosity, rescue work, creativity and a little bit of obsession rolled into one. If I hear a chainsaw nearby, there’s every chance I’ll wander over to see what treasure might be hiding in the offcuts. Most of the wood I use is locally sourced and always ethically gathered: pruned branches saved from garden waste, wind-fallen limbs given a second life, or pieces generously passed on by the wonderful tree surgeons I’ve befriended along the way.
I’m just as happy turning green (unseasoned) wood — letting it move, bend and find its own character as it dries — as I am working with timber that’s been carefully seasoned at home or by traditional methods. I love repurposed wood too, and I’m lucky that both my father and my son are keen woodworkers, meaning there’s always an interesting offcut waiting for its moment on the lathe.
My fascination with wood goes back as far as I can remember. One of my favourite childhood memories is helping my father dig up a boxwood tree opposite the church where I would later be married. That same boxwood has now matured beautifully, and I’m quietly delighted to be turning pieces from timber he never quite got around to using — a continuation of a story rather than the start of one.
In 2008, our family was gifted a Record Power CL3 lathe. Everyone had a go, but while others moved on to new hobbies, I stayed. There’s something magical about a sharp gouge meeting a beautiful piece of wood — hours disappear, worries fade, and the world slows down. Woodturning has become my happy place, balancing life as a nurse with a hobby that has grown wonderfully out of hand.
Eventually we realised we owned more wooden bowls than we had meals to fill them, and more ornaments than shelves to display them — as did most of our relatives! Sharing the pieces created during these peaceful hours felt like the natural next step, and Jacki Mundy Makes was born.
I’m always searching for unusual timber and new forms to explore. I never make the same piece twice. Similar? Sometimes. Identical? Never. Every item carries its own grain, movement and personality — a truly one-of-a-kind object waiting to become part of someone else’s home.
Sustainability matters deeply to me. Whenever possible, your order will arrive packaged using recycled materials, continuing the idea that beautiful things don’t need to cost the earth.
While some pieces are playful and tactile, they are artworks rather than toys, so please keep them safely out of reach of children.
I want you to genuinely love your Jacki Mundy Makes piece. If you’d like more information, photographs, or simply a chat about a piece before choosing, please get in touch — I’m always happy to help. And if one of my creations finds a home with you, I’d be delighted if you shared it and tagged @jackimundymakes on Facebook or Instagram; your support helps this small, joy-filled venture continue to grow.
If something isn’t quite right, returns are welcome for a refund (return postage paid by the buyer).
Thank you for stopping by, supporting handmade work, sustainable materials, and — most importantly — my slightly overgrown hobby.
