Midterm review of 2023

Where is the year going? and why isn’t it summer yet?

My woodturning journey has been going well for the first half of 2023, especially in regard to colour and texture - just as I had hoped for the year.

I’ve used many colour mediums on my makes; gilding wax ( vine bowls), paints ( exceedingly fancy applewood bowl) , felt tip pens (rainbow yarn bowl) and the colour of the wood itself ( a purple heart bowl for my mothers mothers day gift) a cocobolo bowl from the archives - another one not on the website. I’ve some plans for some home spalted English woods, they will hopefully make it to the website - unless its snapped up from instagram.

Texture experimentation was also been going well. My first experiment of hand carving went exceptionally well (exceedingly fancy applewood bowl) and I was delighted by the finished piece. The dremel has been used plentifully for horse noses and the glitter dish and I rather fancy trying carving a bear, a small bear … but more details will be posted as and when it progresses.

Sharpening my technique -the ongoing quest for skill uplift is also progressing. I didn’t get a place at the Glenn Lucas summer woodturning week, but the school of random YouTube is ongoing and I’ve signed up for the Hampshire Sheen Academy to ‘refine the shine’ of finished products, so expect things to be more shiny going forward. I’m being more aware of the different cuts and their corresponding shavings ( Ribbons- from wet wood, Curls from the skew, and dust from old wood!)

Finding my people, an ongoing crusade! But Ive found you! So, thank you! Please do message me so it’s not all one way traffic - I love to talk wood! Ive been to 5 face to face events so far this year and met some lovely people, who I hope will return for future purchases. I’m planning some ‘man gifts’ for my jackimundymakes selection @Pantry61, Boxted . The Finchingfield gallery exploration hasn’t moved forward yet, but the Eype Eats Easter opening did swift sales with the Easter Chicks. I’ve started looking to book my Christmas events and hope to take my apples to the apple festival at Cressing Temple this autumn, but we have to have summer first!

I hope to keep trying new stuff, more animals … more textiles… more yarn bowls… keep watching the social media for the latest makes hot off the press.
