what’s on the workbench?

In terms of what’s on the work bench, I’d like to say something new innovative and exciting …  but I’m actually working on some jackimundymakes perennial favourites and why not? They’re favourite for a reason. These favourites have an additional twist, I always like to say I know where my makes once grew as trees and I really can with this latest batch!

I’m using retired Hylands Estate www.hylandsestate.co.uk trees (with their kind permission) and selling them in the made@hylands shop.

So, what are the favourites….? Robins! They are an all-year-round favourite and not just for Christmas – although they are even more popular at yuletide and rightly so. TBF a face on anything and its instantly endearing but jackimundymakes robins are bright and gay with their stained red breasts and even though the wood is from a hedgerow, they’ve turned out lovely and smooth – must be something to do with the skills of the woodturner…

There are a restricted amount of makes available in the Hylands Hedgerow Collection because the hedgerow is only coppiced in autumn/ winter (all to do with the sap rising and outside my knowledge of tree husbandry – I’m best with trees once they’re retired and called ‘wood’ even if the drying of ‘tree into wood’ falls into my domain – which incidentally takes ages – 1 year per inch)

As well as the robins I’m making some hedgerow mice – another favourite make, mice are ideal for restricted wood stock because they can be any size and tbh the smaller the cuter! And these sweet little mice’s – will have to ignore the spellcheck on that one! can work around any little nasties in the wood like old wormholes, cracks and splits.
